An EFIN is a unique number assigned by the IRS that allows you to electronically file tax returns. You receive an EFIN when you're approved as an ERO (Electronic Return Originator). The EFIN identifies your tax practice in the IRS e-file system and is required to transmit returns electronically. The application process includes background checks and IRS approval.

What is an ERO (Electronic Return Originator)?

An ERO is a tax professional authorized by the IRS to electronically file tax returns on behalf of taxpayers. To become an ERO, you must apply to the IRS, pass a suitability check, and receive an EFIN (Electronic Filing Identification Number). As an ERO, you're responsible for ensuring returns are transmitted securely and accurately to the IRS.
